How to Replace PL/CFL Plug-In Lamps With LED: Twin, Quad & Triple Tube

Plug-in CFLs — the twin-tube, quad-tube, and triple-tube PL lamps in downlights, sconces, and commercial fixtures — are being phased out as states ban mercury lighting. The good news: replacing them with LED is straightforward, cuts energy use by half or more, and ends the flicker-and-warm-up annoyance of fluorescent. Here's how to do it right.

Step 1: Identify Your Existing Lamp
Remove the old PL lamp and note three things: the base (G23, GX23, G24d, G24q, GX24q), the pin count (2 or 4), and the wattage (often 13W, 18W, or 26W). The tube shape — twin, quad, or triple — tells you the physical size. Our PL base guide walks through identification.
Step 2: Choose Your LED Path
Like LED tubes, LED PL lamps come in two main types based on how they handle the ballast:
Type A — Ballast-Compatible (Plug-and-Play)
These LED PL lamps work with your fixture's existing electronic ballast. Installation is as simple as removing the CFL and plugging in the LED — no wiring, no tools. It's the fastest swap, ideal when you have many fixtures and want minimal labor. The trade-off: you still rely on the ballast, which consumes a little power and will eventually fail.
Type B — Ballast-Bypass (Direct Wire)
Type B lamps run on line voltage with the ballast removed from the circuit. This requires rewiring the socket (a job for an electrician or a confident DIYer) but eliminates the ballast as a future failure point and maximizes energy savings. Best for older fixtures or when the ballast is already failing.
Step 3: Match Brightness, Color, and Orientation
Replace by lumens, not watts — a 9W LED PL puts out roughly 900–1,100 lumens, matching an 18W–26W CFL. Pick a color temperature (2700K–3000K for warm spaces, 4000K–5000K for task and commercial areas). Some PL LEDs are designed for vertical mounting, others horizontal — check your fixture's lamp orientation so the light spreads correctly. Many newer models work either way.
Step 4: Install and Test
For Type A, simply seat the new lamp in the socket and switch on. For Type B, cut power at the breaker, rewire per the lamp's instructions, remove or bypass the ballast, then test. Confirm the lamp lights instantly with no flicker.
Or Upgrade the Whole Fixture
If a downlight is old or the ballast is dead, an integrated LED retrofit module or new LED fixture can be the better value — no lamp to replace again. But for most fixtures, a direct LED PL swap is the quickest win.
Recycle the Old CFLs
PL/CFL lamps contain mercury. Never put them in the household trash where prohibited — take them to a hazardous-waste or lamp-recycling drop-off. If one breaks, ventilate the room and follow EPA cleanup steps (don't vacuum).
