How to Switch From Fluorescent to LED: Tubes, CFLs & Ballast Bypass

With fluorescent bulbs being phased out in more states every year—and LEDs costing less to run and lasting far longer—now is the perfect time to convert. The good news: switching from fluorescent to LED is usually straightforward. This guide covers CFLs, linear tubes, and the all-important question of what to do with the ballast.

Replacing CFLs (the Easy One)

Compact fluorescent lamps—the spiral and folded-tube bulbs that screw into standard sockets—are the simplest to convert. Just match the base (usually E26 medium or E12 candelabra) and the brightness in lumens, then screw in an LED. A 13–15W CFL produced about 800 lumens, so look for an LED around 800 lumens to match. Pick your preferred color temperature while you're at it. Done.

Replacing Linear Fluorescent Tubes (T8/T12)

Tube fixtures are where people get stuck, because of the ballast—the component that regulates current to a fluorescent tube. LED tubes don't need a fluorescent ballast, so you have three conversion paths:

Type A: "Plug-and-Play" (Ballast-Compatible)

These LED tubes are designed to work with your existing fluorescent ballast. Installation is as simple as removing the old tube and dropping in the LED—no wiring. The trade-off: you still depend on the ballast, which uses a little energy and will eventually fail. Easiest option, least disruptive.

Type B: "Ballast Bypass" (Direct Wire)

Type B tubes run on line voltage directly, with the ballast removed from the circuit. This requires rewiring the fixture (a job for someone comfortable with wiring or an electrician), but it eliminates the ballast as a future failure point and maximizes energy savings. Most efficient long-term, more install effort.

Type C: External LED Driver

Type C systems replace the ballast with a dedicated LED driver. They offer the best performance and dimming control and are common in larger commercial retrofits, but involve the most installation work.

Or Replace the Whole Fixture

If a fluorescent fixture is old or yellowed, a modern integrated LED fixture or LED retrofit kit can be the better value—no tubes to replace ever, sleeker look, and often a quick swap onto the existing mounting and wiring. For shop and utility spaces, LED "wraps" and high-bays are popular drop-in upgrades.

Match Brightness and Color

Whatever method you choose, match the output: a standard 4-foot T8 fluorescent tube put out roughly 2,200–3,000 lumens, so choose an LED tube in that range. For color, 4000K–5000K is typical for kitchens, garages, and workspaces, while 3000K–3500K feels warmer for retail and living areas.

Recycle the Old Tubes Safely

Fluorescent tubes and CFLs contain mercury, so never put them in household trash where prohibited. Take them to a hazardous-waste facility or a lamp-recycling drop-off.
