Type A vs Type B PL LED Lamps: Ballast-Compatible vs Ballast-Bypass

When you shop for LED PL lamps, you'll see them labeled Type A, Type B, or sometimes Type A/B. This designation is the most important spec after the base, because it determines whether your swap is a 10-second plug-in or a wiring job. Here's how to choose.
What the Ballast Does
Every plug-in CFL fixture has a ballast — a component that regulates the current a fluorescent lamp needs to start and run. LED lamps don't need a fluorescent ballast at all, so manufacturers offer two strategies: work with the existing ballast, or bypass it. That's the Type A / Type B distinction.
Type A: Ballast-Compatible (Plug-and-Play)
A Type A LED PL lamp is engineered to run on your fixture's existing electronic ballast. You remove the old CFL, plug in the LED, and you're done — no tools, no wiring, no electrician.
Pros: Fastest possible installation; ideal for many fixtures or rental/commercial spaces where labor cost matters; reversible.
Cons: You still depend on the ballast, which draws a little extra power and will eventually fail (when it does, the lamp goes dark even though the LED is fine). Compatibility is limited to specific ballast types — check the lamp's compatibility list.
Best for: Quick retrofits where the existing electronic ballast is healthy and you want zero downtime.
Type B: Ballast-Bypass (Direct Wire)
A Type B lamp runs directly on line voltage (120–277V). You remove or bypass the ballast and wire the socket straight to power. It's a bit more work up front but removes the ballast permanently from the equation.
Pros: Maximum energy efficiency (no ballast losses); no ballast to fail later; works regardless of the old ballast's brand.
Cons: Requires rewiring the fixture — best done by an electrician; once converted, the socket only accepts ballast-bypass lamps.
Best for: Older fixtures, failing ballasts, or anyone optimizing for long-term efficiency.
Type A/B (Universal / Dual-Mode)
Some lamps are dual-mode, meaning they can operate either on the existing ballast OR ballast-bypassed after rewiring. These offer the most flexibility: install plug-and-play today, convert to direct-wire later when the ballast dies.
What About Type C?
Type C systems replace the ballast with a dedicated external LED driver. They deliver the best dimming and performance and are common in large commercial retrofits, but involve the most installation work. For most PL applications, Type A or Type B is the practical choice.
